Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are one of the modest and most versatile restorations that enhance the aesthetics of your smile and mouth functions. They can be used to correct various oral conditions such as cracked, damaged, worn out, extremely weak, or overly spaced teeth.  At River Family Dentistry, we provide customized dental crowns to correct your tooth imperfections.

What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns look like hollow, tooth-shaped caps which are secured onto an existing natural tooth. They are made of tooth-colored ceramic material, which is highly aesthetic in appearance. They seamlessly blend in with the shape and color of your natural teeth. Dental crowns will feel, look, and function, just like a natural tooth. When cemented into position, crowns cover the complete exposed portion of the tooth above the gum line.

Why Choose Dental Crowns?

  • To protect a tooth that has deteriorated due to decay or cavities
  • To hold a fractured tooth from breakage
  • To replace an old, broken, or declining tooth filling
  • To restore length on worn-down teeth
  • Cover and support a tooth with a large filling if not much of the natural enamel structure is left.
  • To make cosmetic changes such as closing spaces between teeth, reshaping or rotating teeth, or covering a discolored tooth.
  • To reinforce a tooth that has undergone a root canal procedure
  • To hold dental bridges in place
  • To cover a dental implant

What Is the Procedure for Getting Crowns?

To start the procedure, your natural tooth will be prepared. This involves reducing the tooth size by reshaping it to allow adequate room for dental restoration. If any decayed tissues are present, they will be meticulously cleaned out.

After the impaired tooth has been prepared, an impression will be taken that provides an exact mold for your dental crown. Your impression will be sent to our dental lab to fabricate the restoration. While choosing the shade of your crown, care is taken to match them with your existing natural teeth.

Meanwhile, a temporary crown will be attached to protect the prepared natural tooth until your customized crown is ready. The temporary crown will seal and safeguard the tooth, as well as restore its aesthetic look.

The temporary crown will be taken out during the subsequent appointment, and the new appliance will be fitted. The required adjustments will be made before permanently bonding them onto your natural tooth.
